What to actually look for in a hairdressing academy

If you're considering a private hairdressing academy, here's what actually matters — beyond the brochure.

Is it attached to a working salon? Training in isolation is dangerous. If your academy doesn't run its own commercial salon floor, you won't develop speed, client-reading, or commercial polish. Ask to see the client book.

Who teaches the foundational modules? A programme that hands beginners to junior tutors while the senior name only appears for masterclasses is a warning sign. Foundations matter most. You want the most experienced person in the building teaching you to hold your scissors.

Which brands back it? L'Oréal, Kérastase and similar don't lend their name lightly. Their master educators visit and certify. Their certifications open doors in top salons.

What's the cohort size? Ten students, capped by insurance, and it's roughly the ceiling for real mentorship. Above that, you're in a classroom, not an apprenticeship.

What happens after graduation? A serious academy has a placement network — real, named partner salons that hire from its cohorts. Ask for a list.
