Colour theory basics every professional stylist should know

Confident colouring starts with three things you can rehearse without a client in the chair.

Underlying pigment. Every level of natural hair has a warm underlying pigment. Level 6 is orange. Level 8 is yellow-orange. Level 10 is pale yellow. Knowing which pigment you're lifting through — and which you'll need to neutralise afterwards — is the difference between beautiful cool blondes and brassy disappointment.

The tonal wheel. Ash neutralises orange. Violet neutralises yellow. Green neutralises red. Understanding this well enough to mix a corrective toner on instinct is the single skill most likely to earn you a promotion in your first two years on the floor.

Timing and porosity. The same formula on the same head applied for eight minutes versus twenty gives you completely different results — and porous hair changes even faster. This is why we drill process discipline from the first week.

Master these three and every colour service becomes a controlled, repeatable outcome. That's what clients pay for.
